2023 Jeep Compass Review | New Compact SUV Explained
Last year, the Compass went through a hefty redesign, making the vehicle we know and love today – the 2023 Jeep Compass. This year every Compass is more fun to drive. This is due to three new standards: Active Drive 4x4, Selec-Terrain, and a more powerful turbo engine.
With a lower price point, this compact SUV certainly has true incentives that set it apart from other compact SUVs, such as the Honda CR V. A 5x-faster processor is behind the larger infotainment touchscreen and available digital cluster.
In 2022, the Jeep Compass earned the “Top Safety Pick Rating” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. For the 2023 model year, there are more driver assistance technologies to help you avoid crash scenarios.

Standard Jeep Compass Specs
Before the 2018 model year, the Compass was noticeably smaller compared to other compact SUVs. Today’s customers will be pleased to find the 2023 model year is larger with additional cargo capacity, making it a more suitable vehicle for road trips, daily errands, and the true adventures that Jeeps are built and known for.
Definitely exceptional, these SUVs have 100 cu ft of passenger volume. Plus the cargo volume is available up to 59.8 cubic feet.
A new inline four-cylinder engine is turbocharged to increase output to 200 horsepower from the standard 177 horsepower with the 2022 engine. The turbo produces 221 lb-ft of torque to make it more fun to be behind the wheel.
In addition to the turbo technology that promotes efficiency, these four-wheel drive vehicles have a fully disconnecting rear axle. By turning off the power-transfer unit, the SUV can effectively drive in front-wheel drive until the four-wheel drive is needed. This class-exclusive capability is another reason that Compass is leading other compact SUVs today.
Driver Assistance Technology
As far as driving assistance, the Compass offers exceptional standard features. In 2022, Jeep covered many angles with lane departure warnings and assistance as well as forward collision warnings (FCW) and active braking. To watch traffic alongside the vehicle, this included blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection.
New this year, the FCW system is even more useful with the addition of pedestrian and cyclist active braking. Lane departure is more useful with Active Lane Management. A new feature is drowsy driver detection which watches for distracted behavior.
Parking can be simplified with full parallel and perpendicular assistance. A Surround View Camera is offered for the Latitude trim levels and higher. This camera is a 360-degree, “bird’s eye view” of your vehicle while parking or backing out.
A Distinctive Exterior
Compass exterior colors include Billet Silver, Diamond Black, Sting Grey, and Granite Crystal. Favorite personality colors include Laser Blue Pearl and the exciting Redline Red.
Like any good Jeep, there are real changes as you move up the trim ladder. The model-specific 7-slot grille has slimmed slots, giving a sportier expression to the Jeep Compass Trailhawk. A Limited High Altitude model has neutral gray accents and painted side flares as well as body-color front and rear fascias. Limited (RED) editions have a painted roof, red mirror caps, and 19-inch painted wheels.
Advanced LED lighting technology is used in all Jeep Compass models. This includes front LED reflector headlamps as standard. Premium LED fog and projector headlamps are available for the Latitude LUX, Trailhawk, and Limited trims. The IIHS has given these headlights its good rating.
A Spacious and Comfortable Interior
As mentioned before, the 2023 Jeep Compass has exceptional legroom and cargo space, especially for a compact SUV. A redesigned dashboard and instrument panel make everything more ergonomic for the driver.

The Jeep Compass Sport trim is the entry-level model. Shoppers will be excited about the available gloss black roof and a hands-free power liftgate. Jeep Compass Latitude models add premium cloth-and-vinyl bucket seats and ambient LED interior lighting.
Altitude, Latitude Lux, and Limited trims have a leather interior and an eight-way power driver seat. With digital instrumentation and a large infotainment system, this new design gives you a luxurious look into the future of automobile interiors.
Off-Roading and Trail-Rated Capability
As Kelley Blue Book noted in its Jeep Compass review, this crossover is one of the few compact SUVs that can tackle tough terrain. In fact, going off-road is easier now that every model has bigger wheels, Selec-Terrain, Active Drive 4x4, and a more powerful engine choice. The standard terrain modes are snow and sand/mud, making this ride a champ on road or off.
With the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, this SUV represents the brand’s Trail-Rated tradition. It offers up to 8.6 inches of ground clearance and a powerful Active Drive Low system. It has the ability to ford up to 19 inches of water. Hill descent control makes downhill travel less stressful on the engine, brakes, and transmission.
Selec-Terrain adds Rock mode and helps this SUV achieve a class-leading crawl ratio. Standards include red tow hooks, aggressive tires, and extra skid plates.
