2023 Jeep Gladiator Review | Off-road Midsize Truck
Now in its fourth year as a model, the 2023 Jeep Gladiator has made its mark and earned its place in the midsize truck class.
Here’s what sets it apart. First, it’s the only open air pickup truck on the market. Second, it is the only midsize pickup to be an off-roader at every trim level. Finally, with so many colors and ways to customize, it’s fun even if it is just standing still.
Of course, you must ask if this pickup is the right one for you. That’s a good question, and hopefully this in-depth review will give you the answer. Keep scrolling for the most up-to-date information about this new Jeep truck and how it differs from the 2022 Jeep Gladiator.
Hardcore Capability
This truck has “hardcore capability out of the box” (Edmunds), and that’s what makes it so different from other midsize trucks. While Nissan, Ford and the others offer off-roading editions, nothing quite matches the capability of the Gladiator Jeep even in its base edition.
The 285-horsepower engine was tested on the Wrangler before it became the staple of the Gladiator truck lineup. The high-torque Ecodiesel is available on all but the top trim. These powertrain choices are designed to provide a high level of torque output at low speeds for off-roading adventures.
Fortunately for the driver, these engines provide the get-up-and-go needed to keep the Gladiator competitive on the highway. Handling is easy whether you choose the standard manual transmission or the 8-speed automatic transmission. Jeep Gladiator towing is easier with the standard trailer sway damping feature.

Base Edition
The 2023 Jeep Gladiator Sport may be all that anyone needs. It is designed to show you a good time whether it’s on the road or off. The 32-inch tires, removable doors and fold-down windshield prove this truck is serious about adventure. A folding soft top allows the Gladiator to be the only convertible truck on the road.
The driver’s cockpit includes push button start, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, and standard cruise control. A 7-inch touchscreen works with your voice commands. Additional connectivity is provided via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
Overland Trim Level
The Overland trim level is a definite favorite. It modernizes the cabin with power windows, power doors, and dual-zone automatic climate controls.
Tech toys include a premium Alpine sound system and the UConnect 8.4-inch touch screen. Navigation helps you find your destination. This model has USB ports on both rows.
Rubicon Trim Level
With the Gladiator Rubicon trim level, owners graduate to the most exciting off-roading equipment. This includes 33-inch all-terrain tires, front and rear locking differentials, and a stabilizer bar with electronic disconnect.
Jeep builds this Trail-Rated truck with a larger 4.10 rear axle. This makes it more rugged off-road and allows it to tow more. The fenders are built to provide better clearance on the trail. The suspension is upgraded with Fox shock absorbers.
Skid plates and rock rails help stop debris from damaging the truck. It gains a 2-speed transfer case to improve off-road gearing. For more details see your dealer. Earnhardt CDJR has off-roading experts who can help you find the best Jeep truck for your adventures. Schedule a test drive.
Mojave Trim Level
If you want the Desert Rated Gladiator, that’s the Mojave. It just seems built for Phoenix AZ excursions. This one is outfitted differently from the Rubicon. It’s all about high-speed desert runs instead of rock crawling. This allows drivers to utilize low-speed four-wheel drive capability at higher speeds.
Mojave Gladiators standard taller with a 1-inch lifted front suspension. They have Fox internal bypass shock absorbers to take the edge off of fast moves on desert sand.
Wrangler vs Gladiator
Let’s be clear. The Gladiator truck is more than a Wrangler with a cargo bed. It has its own athletic build. It has a bigger cabin than the Wrangler 4-door, too.
Jeep Gladiators are a bit longer than Wrangler 4-door models. This means that they can’t quite match the Wrangler in off-roading angles. Yet, approaches and departures are better for this Jeep truck than rivals. It still has the edge everyone expects from Jeep.
Built to go off-road, the Gladiator has tight overhangs up front and in back. It is tougher than necessary to ensure that it can take punishment on the trail. Furthermore, like the Wrangler, it has four-wheel drive at every trim level. For those who want a custom Jeep Gladiator, it’s easy to get that with the trim levels and packages, just as it is with the Wrangler.
Choosing between the Gladiator and Wrangler 4-door comes down to whether you want a truck or an SUV. You can be sure you won’t lose out on off-roading capability.
