2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Review | Electric Jeep Explained
Technology reaches its latest peak in the 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. This is the hybrid trail-ready SUV few would see coming, unless they were watching the Jeep brand’s evolution toward electric vehicles.
Still, can an electric Wrangler be as sturdy, capable, and fun as the traditional model? In this review, we’ll look at the way the Wrangler 4xe mirrors the regular model and how it rolls forward to do much more for its owner.
Jeep 4xe Trail-Riding Firsts
Wranglers have long held the title of off-roading champion. Likewise, they have been open air vehicles for longer than many people can remember. Now they are electric, allowing them to emit almost no emissions on the trail when the driver chooses the electric driving mode.
This capability makes them the first electric mass-produced vehicles to take to the trail. That’s a step in the right direction. A class exclusive among electric SUVs, the Wrangler 4xe has front and rear locking differentials.
In EV mode, this Wrangler can operate silently on the trail. You could say that this open air ride is now even more capable of giving you an immersive experience. These SUVs already offer removable roofs and doors for the ultimate open air ride.
Furthermore, Jeep has seen to it that the electric components won’t cause difficulty on the trail. To protect its battery pack, the 4xe build includes waterproof casing. That allows this electric Jeep to roll through water up to 31.5 inches deep.
Off-road vs Road Capability
To ensure that the 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Trailhawk becomes an off-road leader, it must be very very capable. It certainly has the structural strength and tight build that makes it good on the trail. Obviously, it needs the power to handle this type of adventure.
With 375 horses under the hood, this Wrangler EV has no problem being competitive in traffic and no hesitation being competitive on the trail. Its torque makes it remarkably compliant when you need extra power for any situation.
Drivers command a maximum of 470 lb-ft. On-demand torque is terrific when you need to go from zero to 60 mph as you enter busy highway traffic. These Jeep electric models can do that sprint in 6 seconds.
Even better, this torque is fully available on the trail. This means you can get better four-wheel drive performance even at the slowest speeds when moving forward is most difficult.
Wrangler 4xe models tow up to 3,500 pounds, demonstrating that these plug hybrid SUVs are built to take punishment.
How this Electric Jeep Works
To create this plug in hybrid EV, Jeep needed a fuel-smart engine as its base. For that, it developed a 2.0L DOHC DI Turbo I4. This turbocharged, inline engine is especially smart when it comes to power usage.
Boosting its output, there are electric motors and a 17.3 kWh battery. Like a traditional hybrid, there is an extent to which the vehicle systems help maintain the battery pack’s charge. Every time you brake, the Wrangler system recaptures energy that helps the battery stay charged.
The Max Regeneration setting goes even further. It captures more energy when the vehicle slows without brake pedal use. This makes it an ideal partner on the trail.
The standard charging system can restore the battery’s full charge overnight. An available advanced charger can get it ready in about two hours. Jeep Badge of Honor trailheads are among the remote places that the brand is seeking to establish outposts of its country-wide 4xe charging network.
Drive Modes and Fuel Economy
Drive modes make it possible to choose when to utilize electric-only power. This is done through the Electric, ESave and Hybrid mode. When using the electric mode, the powertrain will run strictly on electric power. It can do this for up to 21 miles at nearly highway speeds. This mode generates almost zero emissions.
As an alternative, the ESave mode works with you to determine when the electric power is needed. As you slow, it recognizes the reduced demand for power and will switch to electric power. Or, you can tell it to switch to maximum regeneration to capture the maximum energy for the battery.
For the open road, there is a hybrid mode that utilizes the whole powertrain to achieve the max for an on-road driving experience. This boosts on-road performance. While hybrid driving is rated at 23 mpg, the plug in electric hybrid capability has a fuel economy of 49 miles per gallon-electric equivalent.
